As a famous Chinese composer of the 20th century, Nie Er is important in understanding the development and politicization of Chinese art and music of the century. A discussion of his ideas about the political role of music and importance of reality for both musicians and their artistic activities, and of how his music expressed modern Chinese nationalism and the spirit of revolution contributes to understanding the symbiotic relationship between modernity and revolution in China. Nie Er integrated different conceptions of art, and was successful in creating a new form of Chinese revolutionary art with Western musical techniques. A study of Nie Er can make possible a reassessment of the significance and impact of China's Leftist intellectual community of the 1930s. Both in subject matter and style, his compositions reflect the high point of Chinese revolutionary music, so that they have served as a model for the following several generations of musicians.
