in order to know if any relationship exist between human papillomavirus (HPV) and coumner neoplasms,we evaluated benign and malignant colorectal tissues for the presence of HPV infection. The ploymerase chain reaction (PCR) , with nested degenerate primers which amplify a specific fragment of the E_6 gene of wide range of HPV_(16) type,was used to determine whether HPV DNA was present in paraffin-embedded slabs from colorectal adenomas and adenocarcinomas. HPV_(16) DNA was detected in 30. 8% (4/13) of colorectal adenomas and 52. 9% (9/17) of colorectal adenocarcinomas. Although recent studies have demonstrated that HPV mainly associates with squamous cell carcinoma such as esophageal carcinoma,this paper shows that a similar infection of HPV exsit in colorectal neoplasms,which suggest that HPV infection may play an important role in development of columner cell carcinoma.
