Due to technical improvements and decreasing development costs during the past two years, the Canadian oil sand product output has surpassed 1 million barrels per day. It is estimated that by 2015, oil sand product output will be above 75% of the total Canadian crude oil output, reaching 2.70 million barrels per day. In order to catch up with the oil sand exploitation, the expansion or new construction of the Canadian oil pipeline system becomes necessary. Comparative analysis of the western Canadian crude oil output trends and the current outbound pipeline capacity shows that additional pipeline capacity of about 600,000 barrels per day will be needed in the coming 10 years. Since the U.S. remains a major export market for Canadian oil sand oil, three lines leading to the US have been expanded and new construction has already begun. The western pipelines to be expanded and constructed, will be an important channel to transport oil sand oil to the Asian market. These pipelines will play a significant role in the diversification of the Canadian export of oil resources.
