According to High School English Syllabus, the English proficiency of prospective high school graduates will soon catch up with that of college graduates', which is stipulated by College English Curriculum Requirement. This poses a great challenge for college English teaching. One way to deal with the status quo is to offer selective courses to non-English majors. This article presents an early probe into the rationale behind a new course-designing practice as well as a detailed introduction to an illustrative course. As proved, implementation of selective courses is a feasible and effective attempt for individualized teaching and integrated language competence cultivation.
