The water valve site at the northern gate of the Great Song City is one of the important remains of ancient Yangzhou City from the Sui to the Song periods. Excavation clarified preliminarily its shape, layout and date. It was built no earlier than the Five Dynasties period and abandoned in the Yuan dynasty, and its vault may have fallen in the Ming period. Well preserved in layout and remaining intact in structure, the site reflects clearly that the water valve along with the northern gate and its barbican formed an important hub of land and water communications in the northern Yangzhou City of the Song-Yuan period. The excavation verified the literal record on the existence of water valves in the Great Song Yangzhou City and the related statement in the Yingzao Fashi (《营造法式》Building Standards ). It has great significance to the complete revelation of the City's aspect, providing important material data for studying its land and water communications and historical aspect in the Song-Yuan period.
