摘要
The 18th World Petroleum Congress, themed as "shaping theenergy future: partners in sustainable solutions", was convened inJohannesburg, South Africa from September 25-29, 2005. It markedthe first time that the Congress was ever held on the African continentover the 72 years since it was established. Given the increasingworldwide concern over the amount of the oil and gas resourceavailable for consumption, plus the impressive petroleum developmentin Africa over recent years, coupled with the huge potential there, thisdoes catapult Africa to the status of a potential new source of oil andgas for the entire world. The Congress was held in Africa specificallyfor the purpose of promoting the local petroleum development andexpanding the source of oil and gas supply for the world.Given the increasing concern for the balance between oil demandand supply, triggered by the continuing oil price spike in the globalmarket, this Congress is closely watched by the global oil and energycommunities. More than 4000 insiders, high-ranking governmentalofficials, experts and scholars from the world over, looked ahead forthe trends of development of the global petroleum sector and market, and explored new ways for worldwide sustainable energy development, and probe into a host of issues covering petroleum exploration anddevelopment, oil refining, petrochemical, natural gas, renewableenergies and oil industry management. This world conference was designed as petroleum-relatedacademic communications, the extent and content of which have lefta deep impression upon those present there. The major views regardingpetroleum development in the future might be summarized in thefollowing seven points: the petroleum sector needs to focus on a highoil price as the basis for decision-making; petroleum and natural gasare still leading in non-renewable resources; technical progressprovides the essential guarantee for the sustainable petroleumdevelopment; a balance in oil and gas demand and supply cannot beachieved without global cooperation; increasing
