Up From Slavery is an autobiography by Booker T. Washington, a famous African American politician. It is through verbal modification (repetition), exemplification, generalization vs. particularization and quotation that “Washington” voices his opinion on the ways of salvation of the black race. Historically speaking, however, Washington' s voice is but a humble and disciplined one from behind the black “veil”, which in turn reveals the crisis of the black identity formation along the way of salvation of the black or colored race in the U. S.
