Activities of selected soil enzymes including urease, proteinae, catalase, sucrase were determined in the area of the lead-zine smeltery and the relationship between the activities of soil enzymes and the index of heavy metal pollution were analyzed. Results showed that the prevailing wind played a key role in the distribution of soil pollution, while the distance of sampling sites away from the smeltery increased on the prevailing wind, the pollution index (PI) decreased obviously and the activities of soil enzymes significantly increased and followed the order as proteinae 〉 urease 〉 catalase. The activities of soil enzymes decreased with the increase of soil depths where PI was more than 5. The activities of uease, proteinae and catalase were significantly and positively correlated. The activities of uease, proteinae and catalase and the total phosphorus in soil were significantly and positively correlated. The results imply that the activities of uease, proteinae and catalase should be used as an indicator for the pollution level in the area of the lead-zine smeltery.
