ano-nickel particles with a rare earth thin shell were prepared by Ar and H2 arc plasma method. The constituents and microstructure were characterized by TEM experiment. The structure of the particles has a nickelcore and a thin shell consisting of Ce, CeO2 and Ce-Ni alloy. A large amountof defects can be formed on the particle surface. Nitrobenzene hydrogenationwas catalyzed by this catalyst. The experimental results showed that thenano-Ni with a cerium shell had higher activity than the pure nano-Ni.Meanwhile, the activities and selectivities of these two kinds of nano-Niwere better than those of Raney-Ni.
