Abstract Twenty patients with respiratory failure were divided into two groups by random. All of the patients had a syndrome as a result of accumulation of phlegm and heat in the lung and obstruction of collaterals by blood stasis. When withdrawn from mechanical ventilation, they had a respiratory muscular fatigue owing to the impairment of Qi and Yin . The patients in tested group received Chinese medicine of eliminating phlegm by clearing the lungs and invigorating Qi and activating blood. The results indicated that the patients who received the Chinese medicine had a better respiratory function than the patients in control group.
