Flood calculation is significant to the construction and safety of engineering,espercially a precise flood calculation is very necessary for Three Gorges dam being built now.The frequency curve to a long historic period of flood is difficult to be obtained since lack of data,despite the historic period of flood observation is as long as 840 years in the Three Gorges.Using the Quaternary geology method i.e.sediment of mighty torrent to calculate paleoflood.the authors conclude that the flood happened in 1870 A.D.is the biggest one since the late Holocene epoch,the criticism period of historic flood is prolonged more than two thousand years,the frequency analysis can be carried out by a discontinuous succession composed of Paleoflood and flood investigated historically as well as measured flood.The paleoflood analysis can effectively improve the accuracyof rare flood section in frequency curve.
