As a confessional poet, Anne Sexton followed Sylvia Plath's example and ultimately committed suicide. Sexton suffered from severe mental illness and often underwent hallucinations. She could write very good poems out of hallucinations. Her madness benefited her and at the same time destroyed her in the end.
