Objective To explore whether the Angiotensin Ⅱcontent and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity are related with the age of animals and if taurine may exert preventive effects on the development of hypertension and the mechanisms of action. Methods Six 4 weeks Wistar rats, six 12 weeks rats and 56 60 weeks rats (male to female ratio 1∶1) were included in this study. The animals were fed with varying content of taurine and β alanine, a taurine transport inhibitor, for 8 weeks. The angiotensin Ⅱlevel and angiotensin converting enzyme activity at the end of 4 weeks and 8 weeks of experiment were assayed and analyzed. Results The content of angiotensin Ⅱand the activity of ACE were increased along with the increase of age( P <0 05). Supplement with taurine decreased both the content of angiotensin Ⅱand ACE activity in the rats (P <0 05). Conclusion Properly supplement with taurine may play a preventive role on the development of hypertension in animals.
