The global demand for acetic acid was continuously increasing in the last few years, and in the several years to come it will increase by 3.4% annually. The world's total demand on acetic acid will reach 8.2 Mt/a by 200. About 1/3 of the total production capacity of acetic acid is now in the United States, Western Europe and Japan, with the majority in Asia. In the future, acetic acid capacity in Asia will continue to increase substantially as the trend proceeds toward regionalization. Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is the largest end use for acetic acid. Acetic acid's future growth is tied largely to VAM manufacture and to a lesser extent to TPA manufacture in Asia.
