The concept of the self represented in Whitman's Leaves of Grass is a dual structure of body/soul and composed of both microcosmic and macrocosmic dimensions. Whitman's understanding of the self is largely derived from Emersonian thought, but there are also significant differences between master and disciple. Whitman explores the full range of the self by relating it to humanity, time, Nature and God.
