Literature, which mediates between dao and art, is capable of soaring the realm of dao as well as falling into the category of technique. Chess-playing is originally a technique, whereby a pattern (the primordial meaning of the Chinese character 'wen' which has subsequently assumed the meaning of 'literature') is formed amid black and white piecesa structure of the Earth and the Heaven out of the law of Nature. Therefore, the game of weichi and the making of literature, just as they are genetically congenial, are nevertheless nothing but techniques; but, when they finally converge in ultimate sphere, they become the embodiment of dao. However, literature adopts quite different means as compared with weichi, for that matter. The former uses 'language' as a medium to establish discourses, to create imagery, to signify, and to translate dao, thus constituting a characteristic system of discourse, imagery, signification and dao. The latter, figuratively termed as 'hand-talking', is a special way of speaking without the language. The way of chess-playing, succinctly described as 'mastering its procedures and its pattern in order to realize its meaning and embody its spirit', creates a 'non-verbal beauty'.
