In spite of the two world wars on its territory during the 20th century, France is still endowed with a very rich architectural heritage. Nevertheless, it is a young country where two-thirds of apartments were built since 1950. Forty thouand buildings whose existence extends over two thousand years are protected in France as historical monuments, including some very recent buildings. A country of a millennium civilization, China can also boast a very important historical legacy. Beyond the conservation of the wealth from the past, whether it refers to the occidental heritage concept where the material elements are conserved or the oriental tradition where the symbols are privileged, there is today an evolution in the consideration of the existing environment. The historical concept of the isolated monument has in recent decades given way to the idea of an urban group to be protected by taking into account minor buildings considered essential to ensure the continuity of protected urban sites. Thus, during thirty years, most of the ancient centres of French cities were the subject of a systematic reassessment of their historical value. Today, the ability to continue to construct new buildings within this context is put to the test. China too has discovered the value of these often fragile, little dense and difficult to protect urban fabrics which nevertheless represent a part of the future. Another problem is the transformation and conversion of existing buildings, often from the 20th century or industry, not immediately recognized for their historical interest. We now try to appreciate their existence, the fact of already being there, the opportunity to develop more quickly and the capital investment they represent. Many industrial buildings were thus converted during these last few years and even 1960's buildings have undergone radical alteration whilst at the same time careful to express their qualities. From the old can be born a new original!
