The article explores the impact of the imperial system on the art of painting from three aspects. Firstly, the fact that the successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations stood a much better chance of being chosen as officials than others was one of the features of the Ming Dynasty's imperial court. Secondly, the strictness of the imperial examination system forced many unsuccessful candidates to join in the rank of painting, enlarging the number of the painters. Thirdly, some of the successful candidates participated in painting in their leisure time, which not only increased the number of the paintings but also improved the cultural quality of the overall painters and gave impetus to the development of the art of painting .
