摘要
那喀索斯神话是西方文学家们诠释最多的希腊神话之一。英国文学中这一神话主题的嬗变反映了从诗歌到小说、从显性到隐性、从修辞功能到对心理特征描写的一种根本转变,彰显了西方文化共享的历史、文化和文学遗产,强调和创造了西方文化最基本的崇尚个人主义的思想和价值体系,对英国乃至西方文化和文学遗产具有独特的价值和重要意义。
The myth of Narcissus is one of Ancient Roman and Greek myths that has been repeatedly told and interpreted by Western writers. This essay traces its literary representations in British literature and argues that the changes of the theme of Narcissus not only reflect a strong sense of age, but also represent a fundamental shift on at least three levels, i.e. from poetry to novel, from overt to covert, from figurative to psychological. It concludes that this recurring theme and its sustained resonance in British literature give full expression to its unique value and significance to Britain, or rather, Western cultural and literary heritage, representing a shared history, culture and literary heritage, which in turn reinforces and constructs the fundamental system of the ideology and values of Western culture that advocate individualism.
