As one of the key CPC leaders and chief editor of the weekly Guide, Cai Hesen made a real-time and relatively in-depth study of the causes, nature and impact of the incident created by the Armed Corps of the Guangzhou Merchants based on the firsthand materials and with the research paradigm of political history as the main method. He also put forward some proposals for handling the incident. His studies were timely and practical with keen political insight, laying the foundation for further studies on this incident. Judged by present standards there are no doubt some drawbacks in his studies, but as a distinctive view, especially observed from the perspective of intellectual history in relation to the studies on the incident created by the Armed Corps of the Guangzhou Merchants, his studies deserve full attention from researchers.
