Laurence Sterne was the most radical novelist in carrying out the artistic development of the English novel in the 18th century. His masterpiece Tristram Shandy not only shows a completely new notion of creative writing, but also presents itself as the first truly experimental novel in the history of English Literature. This paper is intended to explore its unique structure, innovative narration and Sterne抯 technical feat in the treatment of time.
