One enduring belief about the arbitrariness of English idioms is that they are non componential because their idiomatic meanings are not deducible from the meanings of their individual parts. This traditional perspective frustrates the logical account of idioms as a feature of language, which causes some misleading and ambiguity. So idioms are often relegated to the sidelines or simply steered clear of deeper exploration. Borrowing ideas from Lakoff' s cognitive theory, the author tries to challenge the traditional view by using Lakoff' s three cognitive mechanisms to deal with the problem of idiomaticity. It is expected to find out the association between the meanings of idioms and their components.
