硼对高等植物生长的影响，已有不少的研究．有人认为它是植物生长所必需的元素，有人不同意这个意见。硼对海藻的效应，研究的不多．McBride等的观察指出，硼对小球藻的生长没有什么影响。Lewin的实验表明，硼对硅藻的生长是必需的．Nasr等的观察指出，
Several experiments on growth effect of boron on the female gametophytes of Laminaria japonica have been carried out under experimental conditions in the lower temperatures (8-12℃). Some results obtained are summarized as follows.The boron concentration 200ppm.and higher concentrations were observed to be harmful to the female gametophytes which all died after treatment of about 20 days.The concentration of 100ppm and lower concentrations were seen to do no harm.The female gametophytes grew and matured at 1ppm almost as well as the control. The concentration of 10ppm showed some significant growth stimulation and the effect was very obvious at 100ppm Under which concentration the female gametophytes all grew into multicellular filam-ents and maturation was much delayed for at least 6 months.when the female gametophytes grew together.with male gametophytes the growth effects were much less obvious. The stimulation effect of male gametophytes on the maturation of famale gametophytes was thus observed to be quite clear.
