Abstract This paper develops a spline interpolation and smoothing approximation method to scattered data. A suitable spline function space is constructed, and the existence,uniqueness, characteristics and optimal approximation properties of the solution are established. The method can easily be carried out on a computer by solving a symmetric linear algebraic system and is more flexible and applicable than a tensor product spline interpolation. Some numerical examples are given.
