Marine biotechnology has become a more and more important research field which has developed greatly in the world during the last ten years. The research projects on marine biotechnology started from the early eighties in China and rapid progress was made in many projects,such as study on seaweed tissue culture and breeding by cell engineering.Induction of polyploidy and gynogenesis by chromosome manipulation if fish,shrimp and scallop,transgenic studies on fish,scallop and seaweed,and the exploitaion of marine pharmaceuticals and natural products etc. The inland research status of marine biotechnology was intoduced and the stratagem of future developments in marine biotechnology was briefly discussed.
