The nucleation process of surface crystallization of the glass in the CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 system,as well as the influence of phase separation on it, was studied by optical microscopy.The α-cristobalite spherulites in larger number and the α-,β-wollastonite dentrites in smaller number precipitated at the mechanically polished surfaee of the samples.The number of the spherulites per vnit area,Nv,was quantitatively measured. At this experi-mencal condition,Nv does not change with heat treatment time due to its very fast nuoleation but increases with temperature.The Nv on surface of the sample with phase separation beforehand is larger than that without phase separation,which indicates that phase separated glass whose composition and structure are closer to those of crystals precipitated Promotes the crystal nucleation.It is pointod out that the surface nucleation depends primarily on the composation of glass,and that the reason of the fast occurrence of surface nucleation is that the mobility of atoms in the glass surface area is higher and that the decrease of wetting angle for a hetrogeneous nucleation is possible.
