Serum levels of total high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and its subfractions (HDL_2-C and HDL_3-C) were measured in 306 healthy subjects. The relationship between these values and coronary risk factors was analysed. The HDL_2-C and total HDL-C values of females were higher than those of males (P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively) and these values showed negative correlation with ages. HDL_2-C was significantly lowered in subjects with body mass index (BMI) more than 25 when compared with that of less than 20(P<0.05). It was not correlated with cigarette smoking and drinking while HDL_3-C showed an inverse relationship with cigarette consumption and positive association with alcohol consumption.
