摘要
The Erlitou Site in Yanshi is the first field archaeological monograhy giving an account of the main results of archaeological work on the site from the fall of 1959 to the fall of 1978. The publication of the report has very important academic significance to the study of the Erlitou culture remains in various areas, the inquiry into the Xia culture and the research into the relationship between the Xia and the Shang cultures. It is also of great importance to studying the histroy of early Chinese civilization and the formation and evolution of the state in ancient China. Being rich in material, proper in classification, clear in the presentation of ideas and rational in structure, the book well embodies the authors' major knowledge of Xia and Shang archaeology obtained from painstaking investigations for the several decades, though there exist some shortcomings. The study of the Erlitou culture exemplifies that archaeological researches should be carried out in a practical and realistic style of work as all the truths of science should be sought from facts. With the mass accumulation of data and especially the increasing emergence of new evidence, our knowledge should be constantly changed, renewed and advanced.
