In late 1997, Xiamen municipal institutions of cultural relics carried out a rescuing
excavation of the Tang tomb at Xiazhong. This is a rectangular brick-chambered grave. It yielded 29 funeral objects, including pottery tomb-figures and porcelain, silver, bronze, iron and stone articles, of which the double-fish design bowl and the cup represent the superb techniques of silver-ware making in the Tang period. The tomb-owner must have been Xue Yu, a figure with relatively high social status in the late Tang, rather than Xue Lingzhi, a Tang famous scholar in Fujian, as historians believe all along. The tomb is one of the earliest graves known so far in Xiamen. Its form and objects are all valuable material data and have important academic significance to researching into the development of Xiamen.
