Objective: To evaluate the clinical use of bridging titanium plate for restoration of mandibular continuity in patients who undergo bridging titanium plate reconstruction after partial mandibulectomy. Methods: From 1999 to 2004, 24 patients with oral and maxillofacial tumors were treated with radical composite partial mandibulectomy and mandibular reconstruction using a bridging plate. Complication rates and functional results were analyzed. Results: Complications included two hardware extrutions and one plate fracture, all instances of reconstruction failure were delayed for several months. 21 patients mandibular continuity was restored successfully for the duration of the follow-up period, 20 patients interviewed were able to eat a regular diet. Conclusions: Bridging titanium plate can be used as a reasonable alternative for mandibular reconstruction. The functional and cosmetic results were acceptable in many cases.
