Folk comedies of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are full of banter, burlesque, the absurd, and satire. They constitute the opposite pole to the official culture. They present the carnival spirit of freedom and passion. They are centered in festival celebrations in public squares. Their carnival spirit that has the effect of sabotaging orthodox culture has a permanent value.
