Jazz (1992) is Morrison's reconstructional account of the bitter experience of the Negroes who migrated from the Southern country to the Northern cities after the Reconstruction. This paper, focusing on the discussion of the deformed personality and sentiment of the male protagonist Joe Trace in the novel from a social and psychoanalytic perspective, exposes the root cause of his tragic character and romance. With a probe into the subconsciousness of the protagonist, we can get a clear picture of the helpless 'up-rooted' blacks in the industrialization and urbanization era.
