摘要
By the end of the 1960s,British hegemony in the Gulf declined and its forces began to retreat. An arena was provided for U.S.\|Soviet rivalry.Complying with the Nixon\|Doctrine,American government didn’t fill the vacancy directly, but adopted a policy of supporting Iran and Saudi Arabia as representatives of American local interests. From 1969 to 1979,this “Twin Pillar Policy” was the mainstay of American Gulf policy, and functioned successfully.1970s became a decade when American control of the Gulf region became the greatest.U.S.became the dominant exterior power.By implementing this policy, the rule of conservative monarchical governments were assured, the regional political structure was maintained, the Soviet expansion toward this area was contained,American indirect control and stable supply of oil was guaranteed. But at the same time, the fragility of the policy became evident.
