Translation is not just a transfer of codes between two languages, but more importantly, it is an exchange of ideas and culture. It is necessary to give full and adequate linguistic and semiotic descriptions and explanations of the object of translation, i. e., text, for language is truly 'an arbitrary, oral system of signs used for human communication'. However, we should also notice that translation involves, from the very beginning to the end, the translator's subjective reactions to the text. The paper attempts to probe, from the philosophical and cultural perspectives, into the impact of the translator's subjective inclination upon the translation activities, and expresses the view that translation studies should incorporate scientific methods with humanistic spirit. Only in this way can they offer us insights.
