摘要
明义士是甲骨学史上一个颇为重要的人物。本文通过对现存于芝加哥费尔德自然历史博物馆中的书信资料 ,对 1937年至 194 2年间明义士回国后的情况作了介绍。其中涉及到该博物馆曾设法从明氏手中购买其藏品 ,但因为有违于明氏本人的收藏原则而未果一事。这对于认识和评价明义士的收藏活动有一定参考价值。该文最后对国外档案和内部文献的征引问题谈了作者的经历与感受。
The paper talks about Dr. James M. Menzies'activities during the period of 1937 to 1942, when he came back from Qilu University, China, based on personal letters found in the Field Museum in Chicago. From these letters, we can see that Dr. Menzies had his own collecting rule, which was for studies, not for business. The writer also talks about his experience of unconventional quotations of unpublished foreign documents and made an apology for the matter.
