Objective To be carried out was a comparative investigation on the effects of
carbogen and oxygen on the cochlear ischemia among guinea pigs. Methods One hundred guinea
pigs were randomly divided into 5 groups, i. e. bland controlling group (BCG), sham-operated
group (SOG), ischemia modeling group (IMG), carbogen treating group (CTG) and oxygen treat-
ing group(OTG), of the 20 animals in each group, 10 were taken to determine the blood flow of
cochlea and 10 were to test ABR and to prepare the surface preparation samples of cochlea. Re-
sults Compared with that of TMG, the blood of cochlea was increased by 31. 46% in CTG and
decreased by 26. 13% in OTG, the hearing threshold was declined 5. 5dB SPL in CTG and was
seen with no significant difference in OTG. Furthermore, the changes in the morphology of hair
cells in the base turn of cochlea were less in CTG than that in IMG, while there was no signifi-
cant difference seen in OTG. Conclusion Inhalation of carbogen can increase blood flow and im-
prove the morphological and functional conditions in cochlear ischemia. In contrast, oxygen inhala-
tion may induce further decrease of blood flow and give no improving effects on the morphological
and functional conditions in the cochlear ischemia.
