By way of close reading, the present paper builds its thesis on the theory of'Hellenism and Hebraism',advanced by 19th-century English critic Matthew Arnold. It makes an in-depth analysis of the three main characters—Jude,Arabella and Sue—in Hardy's novel Jude the Obscure. The author pro- pounds the theme of'conflict between the flesh and the spirit'and points out that the tragedy in this novel derives from the conflict between Hellenism and Hebraism and culminates in the triumph of the rigid morality epitomizing He- braism over Hellenism as embodied in Sue,who seeks individual liberty and re- volts against conventional marriage customs.
