“Lottery”, the most frequently anthologized story written Shirley Jackson, is an appalling story, which tells that in a certain New England village of post-war United States, a woman is elected by means of lottery as the sacrificial offering ensuring harvest and is then stoned to death by other villagers and her own family. Jackson transfers a story, which is only likely to happen in the ancient society with ethical chaos, to an exaggerated and profound representation of the ethical dilemmas in modern American society. Her purpose lies in revealing the negative influence of the"Equal and Free Spirit"in the modern capitalist society and putting forward her own view of modern social ethics.
