Sarcophine 1 is one of cembranolides, most of which have cytotoxicity and antitumour activity. 1 is an effective chemical protector owing to its toxicity. We now report the synthesis of sarcophine 1. The important intermediate 3, 7-dimethyl-6, 7-epoxy-8-thiophenyl-2-octenal 2 and 6-methyl-8-trimethylsiloxy-oct-6-ene-2-one-1-acid acetate 3, i. e. fragment C<sub>1</sub>—C<sub>8</sub> and C<sub>9</sub>—
