Abstract This paper centers around the heated debate, in which were involved such celebrated men of letters as Lu Xun, Liang Shiqui and Qu Qiubai. The author here endeavours to present an open analysis, through the academic aspect rather than the political one, against some biased views associated with the debate. This paper is divided into three parts: (1) source of the debate; (2) four aspects of the debate: a) the contradiction and unity of 'faithfulness' and 'expressiveness' in translation; b) foe relationship between 'literal translation' and 'free translation'; c) the 'assimilation' and 'westernization' of the target language; d) the acceptability of translation from the target language rather than the source language; (3) the instructive importance of the research into the early debate. Theauthorholds that it is necessary to redefine the so-called translation criterion and enhance the translation criticism.
