oquan Dunhuang and Mogaoku (Magao Caves)was the birthplace of Dun-huangology. However, there have not been any definite explanations on the origin andmeaning of the two words Dunhuang and Mogao,Through the research on ancient ethnichistory and ethnic language of Dunhuang region,it is affirmed that Dunhuang is anotherexplanation of Dunwu which meant“continuous”and“successive”.It used to beabranch of Turkic-speaking Tribe -Yun-xing-zhi-rong (“persons fromXi-rong whose family name were Yun允”),to call the mountains they lived in andmoved about. This mountain, today, located in the west of Qinling where Shaanxi and Gansu meet.At the end of Shang and the beginning of the Zhou Dy-nasty,Yun-xing-zhi-rong were forced to move to the west of He-xi Corridor be-cause of the expansion of the neighboring nations. They brought here the original name, and called thc mountains of thc west of Qi-lian-shan today Dunhuang. At the be-ginning of Han Dynasty, both county and prefectur were named after the moun-tains,Another reason is that the pronunciation of Dunhuang is similar to the word Gua of Di Language,so Dunhuang is also called Guazhou .The word Mogao wasproduced during the period of East Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties ,and named by Xian-bei people who were greatly influenced by Turkic lan-guage which means”sacre”and”holy”,thus Mogao Mountain is equivalentto”sacred mountain”and”holy mountain”,Mogaoku Caves are”Caves of the ThousandBuddhas built in Sacred Mountaeins”.It is famous for its mysterious natural scenery infront of Mogao Mountain.
