本文从几位名家译笔的失误,引起对汉英词语中不对应问题的一些思考.赛珍珠以英译《水浒》而获诺贝尔文学奖,其译文中存在的令人捧腹的败笔居然不为权威的诺奖评委们所觉察.如把"如今江湖歹人多"译成 In these time there are men—evilmen by river and lake,岂知此处"江湖"非实指 river和 lake,而是泛指四方各地,乃 allcorners of the country之意.再如将"那大王已有七八分醉了"译作 Now the robber
This article, based on a large number of convincing examples and from the angle of culture, explores some of the inequality between Chinese and English words. It mainly consists of three parts :1. ' Cultural limited words ' find no equivalent in the other language; 2. The extended meaning between Chinese and English is unequal in value; 3. Figure of speech between Chinese and English is not altogether corresponding. Therefore, in the process of seeking an appropriate equivalent between Chinese and English, when he deals with an individual word, the translator actually faces two different kinds of culture.
