This paper presents an introductory discussion of adjacency pairs and embeded sequences in naturally occurring English conversation. It begins with an investigation into the structural characteristics of adjacency pairs and the rules governing their use in the conversational interaction. The conversational implicature generated by the absence of the second pair part is also discussed, In the second section, the author is concerned with inserted sequences and side sequences. Their structural properties and interactional functions are carefully surveyed. Finally, the author comes to the discussion of what he designates' adjacency triple' -a three-turn structure whose second turn serves as both the second pair part of the first adjacency pair and the first pair part of the second adjacency pair.
