Abstract The paper establishes a tentative model of L2 oral development in the foreign classroom setting by drawing on (1) some representative theories of L2 learning,(2)the relevant empirical research into L2 learning,and (3)the characteristics of English learning in the Chinese context.The model,in turn,provides the basis for identifying key variables related to L2 oral development in the classroom setting,and for examining the relationships among the identified variables.
