Abstract A considerable amount of discussion has been made about the perfective form of verbs, especially as to whether it should be categorized as a tense or as an aspect. However, questions remain. An attempt is made to approach some of the major questions from a new angle. It is argued that the perfective is a form born as required by discoursal development. Hence its irreplaceable role in this connection.
