The radio play 'Kaspar' by Peter Handke takes its subject from stories about Kaspar, but the hero becomes an experimental abstraction, on whom the function of speech and speaking istried out, The many strange sentences that appear in the text remind one of some basic conceptsin Wittgenstein's Tractatus logico-philosophicus. In the author's view, both Wittgenstein andHandke are skeptical about everyday speech, though Wittgenstein goes further, by outlining theconditions for a perfect speech in a logical sense. The author argues that Handke did not havethe intention to interpret Wittgenstein's study of speech, instead he wanted a rebellion against themanipulation through speech. The play demonstrates the acquired characteristics and the drillingof a man through speech, as can also be found in the works of Ingeborg Bachmann and otherAustrian authors.
