Most traditional grammarians hold that there is a complete system of the subjunctive mood consisting
of seven types.Some modern grammarians declare that the subjunctive is not an important category in
contemporary English.A few modern linguists,however,have come up with the idea that the notion of a
subjunctive lnood is a simple transfer from Latin and has no place in English grammar.
The author suggests that the last opinion be preferred.In this article he gives four reasons for the ne-
gation of the subjunctive as an EngliSh grammatical category.In addition,he makes a tentative analysis of
the usage of the verb phrases which are considered subjunctive forms by many grammarians.
