摘要
在英国名诗的群峰丛中耸立着一座“飞来峰”——英国十九世纪诗人费兹杰拉德翻译的十三世纪波斯科学家、诗人莪默·伽亚谟的长诗《鲁拜集》,在大西洋的彼岸与之遥遥相对的、美国诗歌的杰作之中则有现代美国大诗人庞德译的《华夏》。在东半球。
Cathay,Ezra Pound's English version of a handful of classical Chinese Poems, has enjoyed enormous popu-larity in the English reading public since its publication in 1915.Through his translation Pound brought freshness into English poetry on the one hand, and disseminated Chinese culture in the West on the other. However, because of its numerous inaccuracies and errors resulting from the translator's ignorance of Chi-nese,Cathay has suffered severe attack from a few,and cold negligence from many,Ghinese critics. From the success of Cathay we can learn some beneficial lessons, above all, giving enough consideration to the taste of the readers of translation. Many of our translators and critics are doing and evaluating translations of Chinese poetry without knowing the English readers' response. It is time we took the readers' response to a translated work as one of the standards for assessment and criticism.
