Divided into two parts (chapters),the present paper is a preliminary study on the documents of the Han dynasty military colonies unearthed in 1930 along the banks of the Edsen Gol in Inner Mongolia. Its purpose is to ascertain the extent andlayout of frontier defense installations along the banks of the Edsen Gol from thelatter part of the reign of Emperor Wu-ti of Western Han onwards. These consistof a long but often disconnected wall,10 forts,156 watch-towers,a pavilion,a houseand six walled-enclosures or settlements. In addition to this main line of defensewhich stretches from north to south along the river for about 250 kilometres, thereis also a branch line which extends over the mesa area for about 60 kilometres. The first part of the paper gives a general description of this defense wall.Thearchitecture found in the remains was invariably built of unfired bricks, rammedearth or long blocks of stone.Although partially repaired in subsequent times, mostof them were built in the beginning of the first entury B.C.The reign years foundon the slips reveal that they were first built in the Western Han but were still inuse toward the end of the Eastern Han,i.e.the middle of the second century A.D.Apparently,they had played an important role in protecting the Ho Hsi Corridor(Kansu Corridor) against the Hsiung Nu tribes. The second part of the paper seeks to identify the postal stations along thisfrontier and calculate the distances between them on the basis of the recordsdealing with the dispatch and return of couriers found on the slips un-earthed at various sites. This has shed some new light on the military organization ofthe garrison forces along this 250-kilometre-long frontier. The latter were headed bytwo Tu Wei,each responsible for a long stretch of the frontier defense, under thePrefecture of Chang Yi.The one in charge of the northern section was the Tu Weiof Chu Yen while the southern section was under the command of the Tu Wei ofChien Shui. Each Tu Wei commanded about five Hou and below the latterranked successively
