Abstract There have existed two contradictory interpretations of the historical thoughts of Ranke in historiography.In Germany,Ranke has been considered as the heir to the German idealistic tradition,but in other countries,especially in U.S.A.,he has been treated as the father of the “Scientific history”.The origins of Ranke's historical thoughts,his historical view and principles of historical study had nothing to de with the scientifical history which came into being in the late nineteenth century.The reason why he was thought as a “Scientific” historian was that his ways of historical study was considered by many historians to be his principles and thoughts,and therefore his only contributions to the historical stady.This kind of view hindered the complete comprehension of his historical thoughts.
